The Armstrong Spallumcheen Health Care Auxiliary (A/SHA) continues to ensure the best health care for North Okanagan residents with its recent donation of $72,144 to Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.

“Since 1996, the Auxiliary has donated an astounding $1,161,643 to the Foundation.  We are grateful for their ongoing dedication and generosity which elevates the level of care for all of us,” said Sue Beaudry, VJHF Director of Development.

The 2017 funds will support local unfunded health care needs, including:

• $35,289 – Tub replacement at Granville Getaway Adult Day Program in Enderby

• $15,795 – 3 Lift replacements at Parkview Place in Enderby

• $21,060 – 4 Life replacements at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong

Funds are raised through the Auxiliary’s Bargain Bin Thrift Shop located at 3445 Pleasant Valley Road in Armstrong.  Community members donate clothing and household items, which are then sold at affordable prices, with proceeds benefitting local health care.

“We get awesome support from our communities with lots of donations,” said Auxiliary President Jackie Keesey.  “Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with all that comes in the door, but we get through it.”

The Bargain Bin is operated by a dedicated group of 70 volunteers who spend more than 24,000 hours annually, processing donations, selling merchandise and operating the store.

Any clothing that can’t be sold is sent to agencies to help the homeless or to the mainland where it gets resorted for fabric recycling.  The store accepts almost any type of household donation except large furniture due to lack of space, old National Geographic magazines and sets of encyclopedias.

“We recycle and repurpose as much as possible that comes in the door, keeping landfills clean as much as we can,” said Keesey.

The Auxiliary began in 1934 to mend sheets and gowns for the local hospital.  In the 1950’s auxiliary members started the thrift shop, which has seen changes in name and location.  The Bargain Bin has been in its current location at Pleasant Valley Road since 1984.

Armstrong/Spallumcheen Health Care Association is a member of the British Columbia Association of Hospital Auxiliaries (BCAHA), which includes many of the healthcare auxiliaries throughout the province.
