If someone you loved was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) tomorrow, could you stay and support them?
For many families in the North Okanagan, that answer depends on a place like JoeAnna’s House.
This “home away from home” offers a sanctuary to families who must travel to Kelowna because a loved one is receiving life-saving medical care at KGH.
Just steps away from the hospital, JoeAnna’s House provides more than affordable accommodation – it also gives caregivers a community to lean on and feel a little less alone during life’s toughest moments.
The need for JoeAnna’s House has never been greater
Over the past 18 months, the 20-room house has had a constant waitlist.
Many of these families are from our North Okanagan community, the third largest user of the House.
Some folks need to access advanced cardiac or stroke-related care. While others need specialized care that they can’t get in Vernon, such as neonatal intensive care (NICU), radiation therapy, and other complex medical needs.
These extended medical stays are often unexpected and unplanned.
We understand that healthcare doesn’t stop at the city limits. And compassion doesn’t either.
We believe that JoeAnna’s House is a critical extension of care for families from every corner of the Interior.
That’s why we’re partnering with KGH Foundation on a 10-room expansion of JoeAnna’s House.
“JoeAnna’s House has saved me and my sanity”
When Val Cyr’s husband, Herb, suffered a devastating ATV accident on their rural Vernon property, everything changed in an instant. With a severe head injury and multiple fractures, including his neck, back, ribs, sternum, shoulder blades, and pelvis, Herb was urgently transported to Kelowna General Hospital for critical care.
For Val, the need to be close to her husband during his time in the ICU was non-negotiable.
That’s when JoeAnna’s House welcomed her in.
Originally built with 20 family rooms, JoeAnna’s House is undergoing a $5.3 million expansion to increase its capacity by 50%, adding 10 additional rooms. This expansion will bring the total number of rooms to 30, helping to alleviate the constant waitlist, increase capacity, and keep more families together.
