Some local youth have proven that you are never too young to make a difference in your community.
Three Grade 7 students at Coldstream Elementary School — Patrick Dew, Travis Jackson and Brett Lambert — organized a neighbourhood bottle drive which supported the children’s wing of the new tower at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.
“The boys showed amazing initiative in implementing their school project, with its theme to give back to the community,” said Andrea Egan, with the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation.”
Two days before the students went door-to-door asking neighbours to donate returnable bottles, they sent a notice to the each home explaining that they were raising money for the new hospital. Their neighbours in the Middleton area responded generously.
Not only did the trio successfully raise $120 from the returned bottles, plus $59 in donations, but they also received matching donations from Hogarth’s Clinic Pharmacy and Geotech Drilling Services for a total of $538.
When deciding where the proceeds should go, they explain that, “we chose the children’s area of the new hospital because anyone of us could need to use it and because the wife of our teacher, Mr. Kersey, had a baby girl there recently.”
